Mastering the Revels, 1991 Richard Dutton
Mastering the Revels The Regulation and Censorship of English Renaissance Drama,1991 was written by Richard Dutton. First edition. Hardback.
Dutton analyses English Renaissance drama, largely the plays of Lyly, Marlowe, Shakespeare, Jonson, Marston, Middleton, Fletcher and Massinger, through the role of the Master of Revels who censored most late Tudor and early Stuart plays.
In his detailed consideration Dutton concludes that the playwrights were not subjected to unwarranted restrictions from the Masters of the Revels as some previous studies had claimed but had flourished during the period.
