America Takes the Stage Romanticism in America Drama and Theatre, 1750-1900 1955 by Richard Moody is the earliest book-length serious study of 19th century characteristics peculiar to American drama.

Richard Moody (1911-1996) was in the vanguard of post World War II scholars who promoted American drama and theater arts.

America Takes the Stage, 1955, is a classic model for subsequent studies of American drama and theater. Before the influx of college students, thanks to the GI Bill providing free education for American war vets, very little attention was paid to American literature (novels, poetry, drama, short stories, essays) on university campuses.

This hardcover book is in good vintage condition- no written marks or tears.  The tattered dust jacket is unfortunately stuck to the book, and, of course, the book has been handled a lot. It remains, however, firmly bound and sturdy.

The book includes seventeen pages of glossy photographs illustrative of the topics discussed.  It measures 6 1/8 inches by 9 1/4 inches by 1 inch and has 322 pages.
