These seventeen Private Poems by Mercy Warren (1728-1814, the third American woman after Ann Bradstreet and Phillis Wheatley to publish a significant body of poetry) are to be found in the Houghton Library of Harvard University in manuscript form.
Mercy Warren was the sister of James Otis, patriot statesman, wife of James Warren, once President of the Provincial Congress, and close friend of John and Abigail Adams.
Mercy Warren was well equipped through both social and literary circles to harass the British.
