Romance of the Western Chamber, 1968 is a classic Chinese drama translated by S. I. Hsiung. This "imperishable masterpiece" telling of the romance of Scholar Chang and Ts'ui Ying-ying, was created and evolved within China's literary and theatrical arts circles from about 800 to 1300. Since then It has existed as story, poem and play. No other Chinese love story has enjoyed such popularity.
This book includes in an appendix the pivotal story by Yuan Chen (779-831) called "The Story of Ts'ui Ying-ying." There also are more than a dozen illustrations reproduced from a 16 th century artist.
A paperback, this copy is in only fair condition because it is generously interlarded with underlinings and brief comments. The text of the play is clear, however; there are no tears and the binding is firm. The cover shows long handling; there is slight damage at the bottom of the spine, and one edge has been turned. It is 5 inches by 7 1/4 inches by 3/4 inch and has 381 pages.
