Satanstoe: or The Littlepage Manuscripts by James Fennimore Cooper 1860 Hardcover

Regular price $50.00

Jamer Fennimore Cooper's propaganda novel, Satanstoe: or The Littlepage Manuscripts A Tale of the Colony is an early English hardcover publication, 1860, of the American author's activist criticism of New York City society.

From our own private library, this is an antiquarian, rare and highly collectible hardcover book, a "New Edition" with a new Preface.

It is in good antique condition without tears or internal markings. The pages are age-browned. The dark blue hardback cover is unmarked. The binding has a slight weakness at the beginning but is otherwise strong. The edges and corners of the gold embossed spine are worn, as the photograph shows. On the flyleaf are some kind thoughts written to me by an Englishman in 1960.

The book is 316 pages long and measures 4 1/2" wide by  6 7/8 inches high and is about 3/4 inch thick.

  • Remembered best as author of The Last of the Mohicans, The Deerslayer, and the Leatherstocking Tales featuring wilderness scout Natty Bumppo or Hawkeye, Cooper (1789-1851) wrote solid histories of American life and many social commentaries on American democracy - particularly the rights of old landowners to preserve their holdings
  • Satanstoe, written in 1845, was the first and the best of three propaganda novels dealing with "antirent agitation." Subtitled "the LIttlepage Manuscripts" featuring Corny Littlepage, Satanstoe dwelt upon the social life, theater and other amusements in 19th century New York City.
