The Shadow of a Dream and An Imperative Duty, 1962 Edited Edwin H. Cady

William Dean Howells The Shadow of a Dream and An Imperative Duty, 1962 Edited Edwin H. Cady

Regular price $9.00

Haunting dreams and miscegenation anticipate a psychological significance in modern society:

  • (1) the power of our dreams in The Shadow of a Dream (1890)
  • (2) the agonies of miscegenation in An Imperative Duty (1891)
These two nouvelles by William Dean Howells, edited by Edwin H. Cady in 1962, show Howells' "plunge into psychological realism" in the late 19th century and epitomize the insight and courage of the writer who is referred to as "the Dean of American Letters."

This copy is in fair condition.  The dust jacket shows its ragged edges clearly, but the book itself has slight shelf wear and a strong and firm binding.  There are a few marks throughout the book, mainly on the final flyleaf plus a name on the front flyleaf.

The book measures 5 1/2 inches by 8 1/4 inches by 3/4 inch and has 235 pages.
